A group of researchers found a mineral called Carmel sapphire or Carmeltazite. This e̳x̳t̳r̳a̳t̳e̳r̳r̳e̳s̳t̳r̳i̳a̳l̳ rock was found set in precious stones and is expected to be sold in the future. The International Mineralogical Association has included the mineral on its official list. Until now it was believed that it existed only in other places in the universe, but not on planet Earth.
This new mineral owes its name to the place where it was found, which is up on Mount Carmel in Israel. The mineral is composed of titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al) and zirconium (Zr) whose initial of the periodic table is the syllable \’Taz\’ in the word “Carmelite”.
Carmel sapphire is believed to be precious and has been found in the volcanic rock that abounds in the Haifa region, where mineral researchers hired by the Israeli jewelry company Shefa Yamin, which since 2014 has been conducting field investigations of sapphires extracted from the north, often operate. of the country. The company has already registered the “Zafiros del Carmel” brand for its future commercialization. The largest carmeltazite gem found so far is 33.3 carats. Its coloring extends over a wide range of blues and has veins with white and brown or orange, due to the traces of magnesium, calcium and scandium it contains in its interior.
Carmeltazite was discovered embedded in a crystal of corundum, another mineral composed mainly of aluminum oxide, usually found in nature in the form of ruby or sapphire. The essential rarity of these exotic Carmel sapphires lies in their crystalline structure, composition and properties, which are very similar to those of “allendeite”, another mineral discovered by the analysis of a meteorite that fell in Mexico in 1969, precisely in the Allende valley. , and that when it fell, it had disintegrated into thousands of fragments scattered throughout the state of Chihuahua.
